California this week became the first state in the country to ban indoor tanning for anyone under 18, a move that drew praise from health organizations.
About 30 other states have laws that place limits on indoor tanning for children and teenagers, but California’s new law will be the strictest in the nation, prohibiting any minor from using a tanning bed, even with a parent’s permission. The bill was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown over the weekend and goes into effect on Jan. 1.

Life has been quite different for Holly Larsen over the past few years. She walked away from a thriving real estate development and finance career in Utah to move to Texas for a fresh start. While there, she found an “opportunity that fell into my lap.” She was looking for the St. Tropez airbrush tan - a celebrity favorite - and found that she couldn’t find anywhere that offered it. Reaching out to the company during her search for it led to talks… and then her deciding to open the first stand-alone air-brush tanning salon in the U.S. to offer the St. Tropez product.
